Inauguré en 1964 sous le nom de Museum of History and Technology, au cœur de l'un des derniers édifices conçus par McKim, Mead & White, ce musée de la Smithsonian Institution rassemble plus de 1,7 million d'objets qui retracent l'épopée américaine. Sa pièce maîtresse demeure le Star-Spangled Banner original — le drapeau de garnison de 9 mètres sur 10 qui a inspiré Francis Scott Key —, exposé dans une salle à l'éclairage tamisé et sous atmosphère contrôlée, attenante à l'atrium baigné de lumière naturelle qui s'élève sur cinq étages. Le parcours dévoile également les robes d'investiture des premières dames, le comptoir du sit-in de Greensboro, la locomotive John Bull de 1831 ainsi que des trésors de la culture populaire réunis dans l'espace Entertainment Nation. L'entrée est libre et gratuite, sans aucune réservation.
