Inauguré en 1974 grâce à la donation de quelque 6 000 œuvres par l'industriel Joseph H. Hirshhorn, le Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden est le musée d'art moderne et contemporain de la Smithsonian Institution. Le bâtiment conçu par Gordon Bunshaft prend la forme d'un cylindre de béton évidé de 70 mètres de diamètre, juché sur quatre piliers massifs au-dessus d'une cour avec fontaine, et abrite trois étages de galeries disposées en anneaux concentriques. La collection s'étend de Rodin, Brancusi, Matisse et Hopper à Pollock, Rothko et de Kooning, jusqu'à des artistes vivants, présentés aux côtés d'expositions temporaires ambitieuses et d'œuvres in situ pérennes signées Mark Bradford, Barbara Kruger et Laurie Anderson. Le Sculpture Garden attenant est fermé depuis 2023 pour un vaste réaménagement confié à Hiroshi Sugimoto, dont la réouverture est annoncée pour le 31 octobre 2026.
