Le National Museum of Asian Art de la Smithsonian réunit deux édifices reliés sous terre sur le National Mall : la Freer Gallery of Art, inaugurée en 1923 dans un palais néo-Renaissance italienne en granit rose conçu par Charles A. Platt, et l'Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, ouverte en 1987. L'ensemble abrite près de 45 000 pièces, allant de jades néolithiques et peintures chinoises ou japonaises à des céramiques coréennes, des manuscrits islamiques et des sculptures d'Asie du Sud. La Freer conserve également la plus importante collection au monde d'œuvres de James McNeill Whistler, notamment sa Peacock Room aux reflets bleus et dorés, installée à demeure et jamais prêtée. L'entrée est toujours gratuite et sans réservation.
