Beyond Words: The Sacred Art of Ayesha Kamal

Ayesha Kamal paints with pure silver leaf alongside oils, acrylics and ink, and picks materials that change as the viewer moves. Walk along one of these canvases and the metal in the script shifts with you.

Kamal is a calligrapher from Lahore, and the organiser, Hummingbird Film Studios, counts 34 original works. She works in four historic scripts, Thuluth, Moalla, Shikasta and Kufic, layering them into large compositions on grounds prepared the way miniature painters prepare theirs, so the detail holds at size. The texts are verses of the Qur'an and the Asma-ul-Husna, the Beautiful Names of Allah. The three paintings on the museum's page, made between 2021 and 2024, run from 36 to 50 inches across.

It's a devotional show, and Kamal says so plainly: "I try to emphasize the message of the Quran through my art." Entry is free, Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, closed 26 and 27 November for Thanksgiving. There's a gallery talk on her work on Saturday 14 November, 2 to 3pm.
