Millet's The Gleaners (1857) and Van Gogh's Starry Night over the Rhône (1888) both leave Paris for Ueno. They head a loan of around 110 works from the Musée d'Orsay, timed to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum's 100th anniversary and the Orsay's 40th.

The selection runs from Realism through Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to Symbolism, across paintings, sculpture, crafts and photographs, with Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Denis and Signac alongside the headliners. Millet's gleaners, bent double over the stubble for leftover grain, are you in the Tobu Ikebukuro depachika at 7:30pm when the half-price stickers go on.

Tickets are ¥2,400 at the door and ¥2,200 in advance, and resale is banned. Tokyo Cheapo warns of serious queues and advises buying ahead and going on a weekday. Fridays run until 20:00 (last entry 19:30). Closed Mondays with a few exceptions, and 22 December to 3 January.
