Founded in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is Japan's oldest national museum and holds the country's largest collection of Japanese and Asian art. Spread across several buildings in Ueno Park — the Honkan (Japanese art), Toyokan (Asian art), Heiseikan (archaeology and special exhibitions), and the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures — its holdings include roughly 120,000 objects, among them 89 National Treasures and 649 Important Cultural Properties. Collections span Jomon-era pottery, Buddhist sculpture, samurai swords, and Edo-period ukiyo-e prints.
