Founded by Artur Hazelius in 1891, Skansen is the world's oldest open-air museum, gathering around 190 houses and farmsteads from across Sweden, dating from the 14th century to the 1950s. Costumed hosts, craftspeople and historic gardens bring past ways of life to life, while the zoo keeps Nordic wild animals such as moose, bears and seals alongside traditional Swedish livestock breeds. Admission also covers Lill-Skansen children's zoo and the Baltic Sea Science Center, and the park hosts Sweden's best-known seasonal celebrations, from Midsummer to the Christmas market.
