Part of the "extra MAXXI" programme, pairing Futurist masterpieces by artists like Boccioni and Balla with contemporary works responding to their legacy of speed and simultaneity.

Reviewing Gabriele Simongini's "Il tempo del futurismo" at Rome's Galleria Nazionale in 2024, Artribune's Alessandra Mammì called it "vasta e solida" and found one real failure: the "ritorno al futuro", captions imagining a Marinetti who already foresees the internet. Artforum's Hanlu Zhang was harsher, writing that the show "offers little insight" and celebrated technology without question.
This sequel at MAXXI, by the same curator, is built on the leap Mammì disliked. Futurist works by Balla, Boccioni, Crali, Depero, Dottori, Marinetti and Růžena Zátková hang beside new pieces by Fabio Giampietro, Donato Piccolo and Quayola, which draw on Futurist theory to imagine the near future. You get to judge whether that leap lands better when living artists make it. Mammì closed her review by saying contemporary art already has MAXXI, thirty minutes' walk away. The sequel made the walk.
It runs in the extra MAXXI programme. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, and the ticket office shuts an hour before closing.
