Nanda Lanfranco taught herself photography in 1970s Genoa. From 1975 she photographed performances by Laurie Anderson, Charles Simonds and Marina Abramović and Ulay, and from 1983 she covered the Venice Biennale and documenta for Il Giornale dell'Arte. She kept a low profile throughout, and in 2024 her heirs lent her whole archive to MAXXI.

This focus, curated by Lara Conte in the Carlo Scarpa foyer, draws on that archive with prints, documents and never-shown material. It runs by theme and by date, from her start in Genoa, after meeting the critic Germano Celant and working with Ida Gianelli's Samangallery, to her work in the 2000s. You see those decades of the art world from the photographer's side of the room.

It is included in a MAXXI ticket: €15 at the box office, €14 online, free under 18. Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, last entry 6pm. A companion focus on the body and performance art, themes central to her work, is planned at Sapienza's MLAC museum.
