Solo exhibition tracing five decades of Annette Messager's work, transforming fabric, toys and stuffed animals into fragile monuments to memory, identity and desire.
The materials list reads like a child's bedroom: fabric, toys, photographs and stuffed animals. Messager turns them into installations that, in the museum's words, set care against violence, order against chaos and humour against sadness. That is where the title comes from.
This is her first major exhibition in the Czech Republic, drawing on more than fifty years of work, from the album collections of the early 1970s to large recent installations. It fills Galleries 1 and 2. Messager told The Art Newspaper France that the works come from public and private collections and vary in technique and material. She won the Golden Lion at the 2005 Venice Biennale. If the box of toys at your parents' flat in Brno survived the move, you own the same materials as a Golden Lion winner.
Tickets are 160 CZK, or 120 CZK concession. Closed Tuesdays, open until 21:00 on Fridays. There is a multilingual audioguide.
