Crowning Chapultepec Hill, the castle has served as a military college, the palace of Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota and a presidential summer residence before becoming the National Museum of History in 1944. The former Military College wing traces Mexican history from the Conquest to the 20th century, with murals by Juan O'Gorman, José Clemente Orozco and others. The Alcázar preserves furnished rooms from the Second Empire and the Porfirio Díaz era, plus terraced gardens overlooking the city.
