The Museo Cerralbo occupies the lavish Madrid townhouse the 17th Marquis of Cerralbo built in the 1880s-90s to display his private collections. Little altered since it opened to the public in 1944, the palace still shows paintings, armour, archaeology, coins and decorative arts exactly as the marquis arranged them in his gilded salons, ballroom and library. It offers an intimate, time-capsule counterpoint to Madrid's larger state museums.
