The Autry Museum of the American West sits in Griffith Park, opposite the Los Angeles Zoo, and explores the diverse peoples and cultures of the American West through art, artifacts and Native American collections. Founded by singing cowboy Gene Autry in 1988 and later merged with the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, it pairs a deep permanent collection (firearms, Western art, textiles, a cowboy gallery) with changing exhibitions on Native art, California history and the mythology of the West. It is part of the Museums of Griffith Park alongside the Griffith Observatory and LA Zoo.
