Hokusai's complete Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, shown in the UK for the first time courtesy of the Iuchi Collection, including the iconic Great Wave.
Preview: written before the show opened
One print here is Clear Day with a Southern Breeze, the mountain normally printed in full colour and known as Red Fuji. This impression is entirely blue. Very few like it are known to survive, and none has been shown in the UK before.
Dulwich has all 46 prints of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, made around 1830–33 when he was in his seventies: the original 36, plus ten the publisher added after the first set sold well, helped by the newly imported Prussian blue pigment. It's the first time the complete set has been shown together in the UK, lent by the Iuchi Collection in Japan. Three early impressions of The Great Wave hang together so you can compare how each was printed.
The Gallery pitches it as a way in for people new to Japanese art, and under-18s go free.
Blue Fuji
A rare all-blue printing of Clear Day with a Southern Breeze, never shown in the UK before.
Three Great Waves
Three early impressions of Under the Wave off Kanagawa, side by side, so you can spot the differences in printing.
The ten extra views
The prints the publisher ordered after the series became a hit, shown here with the original 36.
Under-18s go free at Dulwich, including to exhibitions.
