Kawai Kanjiro's House

The home and workplace of Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966), the Kyoto potter and a founding figure of the mingei folk-craft movement, opened to the public. He designed the house himself in 1937 on the Gojozaka plot where he had set up his kiln in 1920. The furniture and fittings were designed or collected by Kawai, and his ceramics, nearly all of his wood carvings and his calligraphy are shown in the rooms where he lived and worked, down a quiet lane near Kiyomizu-dera.
