iThe museum occupies the former Ospedale degli Innocenti, begun in 1419 by Filippo Brunelleschi as a home for abandoned children and often cited as the first Renaissance building. The collection includes works by Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, Piero di Cosimo and Luca and Andrea della Robbia, a gallery of detached frescoes and the tokens left with foundlings. Routes cover architecture, art and history across four floors.

Twenty-eight detached frescoes and sinopie, 13th-18th century, saved after the 1966 flood, with Alessandro Allori's cycle and two Lorenzo Monaco wall paintings.
