Collective began in 1984 as an artist-run gallery and since 2018 has occupied the restored City Observatory on Calton Hill, designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818. Across historic domes and the purpose-built Hillside gallery it shows new commissions by emerging and established artists, with a strong focus on early-career artists in Scotland. The site still holds the 1831 Transit Telescope, plus artist audio walks around the hill, a café and a viewing terrace.
