Edinburgh's oldest purpose-built visitor attraction occupies the Outlook Tower on Castlehill, a Category A listed building whose top chamber has projected a live, moving panorama of the city onto a white dish since the 1850s. The venue began in 1835 as Maria Theresa Short's observatory and was reimagined in 1892 by the pioneering urbanist Patrick Geddes, who renamed it the Outlook Tower and arranged its floors as a lesson in seeing the world from the local outward. Today six floors carry more than 100 hands-on exhibits on light, perception and illusion, from the Mirror Maze and Vortex Tunnel to the Ames Room, holograms and a wall of 4,947 pins. The rooftop terrace, free telescopes in hand, gives a 360-degree sweep over the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat and the Firth of Forth.
