Eye Filmmuseum is the Netherlands' national museum and archive of film, housed since 2012 in a sharply angled white building by Viennese architects Delugan Meissl on the north bank of the IJ, directly opposite Amsterdam Central Station. Its permanent exhibition What is Film? draws on a collection of some 60,000 films and 64,000 posters, with mini cinemas, an animation gallery, historic cameras and the award-winning interactive Film Catcher. The large temporary gallery hosts ambitious solo shows by filmmakers and artists working between cinema and visual art, from Chantal Akerman and William Kentridge to Tilda Swinton. Four cinemas screen classics, restorations and new arthouse releases daily, and a panoramic bar-restaurant looks back across the water to the city.
