More in Amsterdam

In Seidl's films, people stand motionless in their own homes and stare silently into the camera. He has framed them this way since his earliest work, and Eye calls these tableaux a hallmark of his unease. On a screen in front of you, that stare lands on you.

This is the first Seidl exhibition in the Netherlands, with early, little-known and newly commissioned film work by the Austrian director of Import Export and the Paradies trilogy. He has filmed Austrian basements, a safari, the world of models and a schlager singer in Rimini in winter. The method is the subject: non-actors play themselves at home, and professional actors are sent into those homes to improvise.

Eye rates the show 16+ and warns of explicit content. Entry is €16.50 (students €11.50, Museumkaart free), and a guided tour runs every Sunday at 14:00 and 15:00 for €7.50 extra. All of Seidl's films screen in Eye's cinemas during the run, several on 35mm, and Seidl talks on Tuesday 17 November at 19:30.
