Sumida Hokusai Museum

Opened in 2016 in the Ryogoku district where Katsushika Hokusai lived most of his life, this museum houses over 1,800 paintings, sketches, woodblock prints and personal artifacts by the artist. The angular, mirror-clad building was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Kazuyo Sejima. A 4th-floor permanent gallery, "AURORA," traces Hokusai's life and techniques through full-scale high-definition replicas and a reconstructed studio, while special exhibitions rotate through original works from the collection.
