Opened in 2011 by the GLBT Historical Society, this storefront museum on 18th Street in the Castro was the first standalone museum of LGBTQ history and culture in the United States. Its main gallery exhibition, Queer Past Becomes Present, draws on the society's archives to tell more than a century of queer life in San Francisco, while a front gallery hosts rotating shows. It also displays the only known surviving segment of Gilbert Baker's original 1978 rainbow flags. A larger permanent home is planned at 2280 Market Street, but no move date has been set and the museum remains open at 4127 18th Street.
