Founded in 1895, the de Young sits on the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park in a copper-clad building by Herzog & de Meuron that opened in 2005. Its collections span American painting, sculpture and decorative arts from the 17th century on, art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, costume and textiles, and contemporary art. The 144-foot Hamon Observation Tower is free to enter and looks out over the park, the city and the Marin Headlands.
