Centrale Montemartini

ArchaeologyArtHistoryClosed todayFrom €11Garbatella (Metro Line B)

Centrale Montemartini is the second venue of Rome's Capitoline Museums, housed in the city's first public electricity plant, built on Via Ostiense in 1911. Since 1997 its turbine hall and boiler room have displayed around 400 classical sculptures, mosaics and inscriptions drawn from the Capitoline collections. The striking dialogue between luminous antique marble and black industrial machinery gives the museum its nickname, "The Machines and the Gods". It remains one of Rome's most atmospheric and uncrowded museums.
