Woodmere grew out of the nine-acre Chestnut Hill estate of businessman Charles Knox Smith, who bequeathed his house and 600 artworks to the public; the museum opened in 1940. Its collection now runs to more than 8,000 pieces devoted almost entirely to the art and artists of Philadelphia, from Mary Cassatt and Thomas Anshutz to Arthur B. Carles and Moe Brooker. A second building, the Frances M. Maguire Hall of Art and Education, opened two blocks away in October 2025 with fourteen further galleries. Wooded grounds open dawn to dusk carry outdoor sculpture including Harry Bertoia's monumental Civic Center fountain.
