Musée Gustave Moreau

ArtClosed todayFrom €8Trinité – d'Estienne d'Orves (M12)

The Musée Gustave Moreau occupies the Paris townhouse where the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) lived and worked, and which he transformed in his final years into a museum dedicated to his own art. The ground and first floors preserve his intimate apartments, while two vast top-floor studios, linked by a dramatic wrought-iron spiral staircase, are hung salon-style with hundreds of paintings, watercolours and drawings. The collection runs to roughly 1,200 paintings and some 4,800 drawings, many of them sketches and unfinished works kept in custom cabinets the artist designed himself. Opened to the public in 1903, its layout has scarcely changed since.
