Housed in the majestic Hôtel national des Invalides, commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670 as a home for wounded veterans, the Musée de l'Armée holds nearly 500,000 objects spanning antiquity to the 20th century. Seven departments range from medieval arms and armour to the Napoleonic era and the two World Wars, alongside the multimedia Historial Charles de Gaulle. Beneath Jules Hardouin-Mansart's gilded Dôme lies the tomb of Napoleon I. It ranks among the largest and richest military history museums in the world.
