The Studio Museum in Harlem

ArtClosed todayFrom $16125 St (2, 3) at Malcolm X Blvd/Lenox Ave

Founded in 1968, The Studio Museum in Harlem is devoted to artists of African descent and to art inspired by Black culture. Its collection spans two centuries, holding works by Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and Betye Saar, plus a celebrated archive of James VanDerZee's Harlem photographs. In November 2025 the museum reopened in a seven-storey, 82,000-square-foot building designed by David Adjaye, the first home built expressly for the institution. It is equally renowned for its trailblazing Artist-in-Residence program, the source of its name.
