Once the private library of financier J. Pierpont Morgan, this Madison Avenue landmark opened to the public in 1924 and now holds more than 350,000 objects. Highlights include three Gutenberg Bibles, the original manuscript of Dickens's A Christmas Carol, medieval illuminated manuscripts, and thousands of Old Master drawings. Charles McKim's opulent 1906 library rooms sit alongside a luminous 2006 glass pavilion designed by Renzo Piano.
