MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States, founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss in a former public school building in Long Island City, Queens. Affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art since 2000, it champions experimental, emerging, and boundary-pushing work across the labyrinthine galleries, stairwells, and basement of its historic brick schoolhouse. It is known for the recurring Greater New York survey of local artists, the Warm Up summer music series, and James Turrell's permanent Meeting Skyspace. Since January 2026, admission is free for all.
