Founded by David Zwirner in 1993, this powerhouse contemporary art gallery occupies several spaces across New York, including a cluster of buildings on West 19th and 20th Streets in Chelsea plus outposts in Tribeca and on the Upper East Side. Architects Annabelle Selldorf and Renzo Piano shaped its understated concrete spaces, which stage museum-quality exhibitions of leading modern and contemporary artists. Admission is free, making it one of the city's great open-access destinations for serious art.
