Whitechapel Gallery · Whitechapel
A special exhibition and sale marking the gallery's 125th anniversary, featuring 24 international artists working primarily in painting, with proceeds supporting the gallery and artists.
Every painting in the room has a price. This is a sale as well as a show, put together with the artists and their galleries for the Whitechapel's 125th anniversary, and the proceeds go to the gallery, the artists and their dealers.
You walk into the Assembly Room, the old Whitechapel Library, and find 23 painters hung together. Shigeo Otake has painted fungi and insects in egg tempera since the late 1980s; Aaron Kudi pours liquid metal and industrial enamel onto cotton duck, then digs images out of what sets; Sky Glabush mixes sand into his oil paint. The gallery's pitch is slowness: pictures that give up their meaning in layers rather than at a glance. It is a former library where nothing can be borrowed and everything is for sale.
It is almost all painting, and the run is short: it ends on 8 November. Entry is free and it is a single room, open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 6pm, until 9pm on Thursdays.
You want sculpture, film or installation: this room is almost entirely painting.
