Jeanie Jean's diary of DIY gigs and the scenes around them, the second Not Dead show, in the Upstairs Gallery.
Preview: written before the show opened
The show's flyer is packed with black-and-white gig photographs: a crowd-surfer in fishnets carried over raised hands, a singer yelling into a microphone, a guitarist mid-snarl. This is Jeanie Jean's diary of gigs.
Jean grew up in Bexley and has spent years photographing the UK's punks, goths, emos and skinheads on Polaroid and DSLR. Not Dead is also her book series about those scenes. Volume 2, she told HERO magazine, is about the underground gigs that sprang up after the pandemic and why independent venues matter to music. If your best gig this year was in a room above a pub, this show is on your side.
It's in the Upstairs Gallery from 16 October to 1 November, and it's free. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00.
