Nihonga painter Domoto Insho (1891-1975) opened this museum next to his home in Kinugasa in 1966, designing everything from its sculptural facade to its interior fittings himself. Kyoto Prefecture took it over and reopened it in 1992. It holds Insho's work across a career that ran from traditional Japanese painting to abstraction, shown in rotating special exhibitions, and the garden hosts outdoor sculpture and ikebana shows.
