The museum opened in 2008 in the Has Ahırlar, the former Imperial Stables inside Gülhane Park, to show the share of Islamic civilisation in the history of science. Twelve sections cover astronomy, timekeeping and marine technology, military technology, medicine, mining, physics, mathematics, geometry, architecture, chemistry, optics and geography. Most of the roughly 585 instruments and models are reconstructions built from surviving originals and manuscripts, following the concept of historian Fuat Sezgin.
