As a teenager in the early 1980s, Gene Hunt was playing the Warehouse and the Music Box, the clubs where Chicago house began. On Halloween he takes Shedd's Bubble Net Stage, while DJ Heather, a Smart Bar and Spybar regular, plays the Grand Hall.
It's a 21+ costume party with the whole aquarium open, touch experiences included. You can catch a Shark Chat in Wild Reef at 7:30 or 8:30, then the Kelp Forest Chat in Oceans at 9. Some habitats are dimmed for the animals' night, and Wild Reef closes at 9, so the sharks call it a night nearly two hours before the DJs do. The menu runs to Birria Grilled Cheese and a mezcal-and-Strega cocktail called Witching Hour.
Tickets are $29.95, or $19.95 for members, and photo ID is checked at the door. Costumes are encouraged, but no full-face masks or prop weapons. Last entry is 10 p.m., last call 10:30, and it's all indoors this year while the North Terrace is closed for construction.
Gene Hunt on the Bubble Net Stage
A first-wave Chicago house DJ who compiled unreleased tracks by Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson and Ron Hardy for Rush Hour, playing from 7 to 10:45 p.m.
Shark Chats in Wild Reef
Keeper talks at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., and the last chance at the sharks, since Wild Reef stops admitting at 9.
The Kelp Forest Chat
A 9 p.m. talk at the kelp forest habitat in the Oceans gallery.
Jinxed VR
A virtual-reality ride aboard a ghost train through what Shedd bills as the world's creepiest funfair.
The Halloween menu
Spicy Ghost Steak Tacos, Zombie Jerk Chicken Wings, Chocolate "Coffin" Brownies and a Ghastly Mint Fizz made with high-proof rum.
Adults only: the party is 21+ and photo ID is required for entry.
