Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest independent membership libraries in the United States, holding around half a million books alongside some 100,000 works of art and the largest surviving portion of George Washington's Mount Vernon library. Non-members can buy a first-floor admission ticket ($11 for adults), which covers the Norma Jean Calderwood Gallery, the art and special collections installations in the Bayard Henry Long Room, and the landmark architecture of the ground floor. A one-hour docent-led Art & Architecture Tour, booked in advance through the Athenæum's ticketing site, goes deeper into the building and its collections and includes first-floor admission; tours are small and often sell out days ahead. To reach the upper floors of the 12-storey building — including the celebrated fifth-floor reading room and its terrace — visitors need a $40 one-day membership.
