The Anne Frank House occupies the Prinsengracht canal buildings where Otto Frank ran his business and where, from July 1942, eight people hid from Nazi persecution in the Secret Annex at the rear. Visitors pass through the hinged bookcase that concealed the entrance into rooms that Otto Frank asked be left empty and unfurnished after the war. Anne's original red-checked diary and her rewritten loose sheets are on display in the diary room, alongside her picture wall and the pencil marks recording how she and Margot grew while in hiding. A quiet, deliberately subdued museum, it also mounts temporary exhibitions and programmes on antisemitism, discrimination and persecution.
