Criada para a nação em 1937 por uma resolução do Congresso e financiada por Andrew W. Mellon, a National Gallery of Art divide-se em três espaços interligados. O neoclássico West Building (1941), com a sua cúpula desenhada por John Russell Pope, reúne arte europeia e norte-americana desde a Idade Média até ao final do século XIX, incluindo o retrato Ginevra de' Benci de Leonardo da Vinci — a única pintura do mestre nas Américas —, a par de obras de Raphael, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet e van Gogh. O East Building (1978), de linhas angulosas concebido por I. M. Pei, acolhe a arte moderna e contemporânea, destacando-se um móbile monumental de Calder no átrio e galerias na torre dedicadas a Calder e Rothko. Do outro lado da 7th Street, o Sculpture Garden, com cerca de 2,5 hectares, estende-se em redor de uma fonte central com peças de Louise Bourgeois, Roy Lichtenstein, entre outros. A entrada é gratuita desde o dia da sua inauguração.
