Inaugurado em 1974 a partir da doação de cerca de 6.000 obras pelo industrial Joseph H. Hirshhorn, o Hirshhorn é o museu de arte moderna e contemporânea da Smithsonian. O edifício projetado por Gordon Bunshaft é um cilindro aberto de betão com cerca de 70 metros de diâmetro, elevado sobre quatro pilares maciços acima de um pátio com fonte, dispondo de três pisos de galerias dispostos em anéis concêntricos. O acervo vai de Rodin, Brancusi, Matisse e Hopper a Pollock, Rothko e de Kooning, estendendo-se até criadores contemporâneos, apresentados a par de ambiciosas exposições temporárias e encomendas permanentes de Mark Bradford, Barbara Kruger e Laurie Anderson. O Sculpture Garden contíguo encontra-se encerrado desde 2023 para um projeto de requalificação assinado por Hiroshi Sugimoto, estando a sua reabertura anunciada para 31 de outubro de 2026.
