O National Museum of Asian Art do Smithsonian reúne dois edifícios interligados no National Mall: a Freer Gallery of Art, inaugurada em 1923 num palazzo em estilo renascentista italiano de granito rosa concebido por Charles A. Platt, e a Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, aberta em 1987 e com acesso subterrâneo. Juntos, abrigam cerca de 45.000 peças, que abrangem desde jades neolíticos, pinturas chinesas e japonesas e cerâmica coreana até manuscritos islâmicos e esculturas do Sul da Ásia. A Freer também conserva a maior coleção do mundo de obras de James McNeill Whistler, incluindo o seu deslumbrante Peacock Room em tons de azul e dourado, em exposição permanente e nunca cedido por empréstimo.
