Instalado no imponente Pension Building de tijolos aparentes, erguido em 1887 e projetado pelo General Montgomery C. Meigs em estilo neorrenascentista inspirado nos palazzos romanos, o National Building Museum é o museu dos Estados Unidos dedicado à arquitetura, design, engenharia, construção e planejamento urbano. Seu Great Hall estende-se por quase 100 metros de comprimento e é marcado por oito colunas coríntias monumentais — com cerca de 23 metros de altura e 2,4 metros de diâmetro —, erguidas com aproximadamente 70.000 tijolos cada e pintadas para imitar o mármore de Siena. Reconhecido como National Historic Landmark em 1985, o museu foi fundado por uma lei do Congresso norte-americano em 1980 como uma organização privada sem fins lucrativos.
