O SAAM abriga um dos maiores e mais abrangentes acervos de arte produzida nos Estados Unidos — incluindo retratos coloniais, a mais extensa coleção de arte do New Deal do mundo, obras de arte popular e autodidata, além da emblemática instalação em neon Electronic Superhighway, de Nam June Paik. O museu ocupa o Old Patent Office Building, cuja construção teve início em 1836 e que se destaca como um dos edifícios públicos mais antigos de Washington. No terceiro e quarto andares, o Luce Foundation Center exibe mais de 3.000 peças em reservas técnicas abertas e visíveis ao público, e as galerias permanecem abertas até as 19h todos os dias do ano.
