Fundado em 1936 como Boston Museum of Modern Art, o ICA é uma das mais antigas instituições de arte contemporânea dos Estados Unidos e transferiu-se para a orla de Seaport em 2006. O atelier Diller Scofidio + Renfro concebeu o edifício de cerca de 6.000 metros quadrados como uma fita desdobrada: o Harborwalk de Boston eleva-se na Jill Medvedow Grandstand de acesso público, prolongando-se no interior como pavimento e teto do teatro, enquanto a galeria do último piso se projeta em balanço até à linha de água sobre quatro imponentes vigas. Suspensa sob essa estrutura em consola, a Poss Family Mediatheque desce em anfiteatro na direção do porto. Não existe uma coleção permanente em exposição: as salas renovam-se continuamente com exposições temporárias e novas encomendas. O ICA gere ainda o Watershed, um espaço sazonal gratuito num antigo estaleiro naval de East Boston, acessível de ferry a partir do museu.
