Construído em 1713 para albergar a sede do governo real britânico em Massachusetts, o Old State House é o edifício público mais antigo ainda de pé em Boston e uma das paragens mais visitadas da Freedom Trail. O Massacre de Boston desenrolou-se nas pedras da calçada em frente ao edifício a 5 de março de 1770 e, a 18 de julho de 1776, a Declaração de Independência foi proclamada da sua varanda perante uma multidão que, de seguida, derrubou o leão e o unicórnio reais.
