Fondata per la nazione nel 1937 con una legge del Congresso e finanziata da Andrew W. Mellon, la National Gallery of Art si sviluppa in tre spazi collegati tra loro. Il neoclassico West Building (1941) di John Russell Pope, sormontato da una maestosa cupola, ospita capolavori dell'arte europea e americana dal Medioevo al tardo Ottocento: spicca il ritratto di Ginevra de' Benci di Leonardo da Vinci — l'unico dipinto del maestro presente nelle Americhe — accanto a opere di Raffaello, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet e van Gogh. L'East Building (1978), celebre per le sue geometrie affilate progettate da I. M. Pei, accoglie l'arte moderna e contemporanea con un monumentale mobile di Calder nell'atrio e sale ai piani alti dedicate allo stesso Calder e a Rothko. Oltre la 7th Street, il Sculpture Garden di circa 2,5 ettari circonda una fontana centrale con sculture di Louise Bourgeois, Roy Lichtenstein e altri maestri.
