Inaugurato nel 1974 grazie alla donazione di circa 6.000 opere da parte dell'industriale Joseph H. Hirshhorn, l'Hirshhorn è il museo di arte moderna e contemporanea dello Smithsonian. L'edificio progettato da Gordon Bunshaft è un cilindro cavo in calcestruzzo di 70 metri di diametro, sollevato su quattro massicci piloni sopra un cortile con fontana, con tre piani di gallerie distribuiti in anelli concentrici. La collezione spazia da Rodin, Brancusi, Matisse e Hopper fino a Pollock, Rothko e de Kooning, per arrivare ad artisti viventi; le opere sono esposte accanto ad ambiziose mostre temporanee e a commissioni permanenti firmate da Mark Bradford, Barbara Kruger e Laurie Anderson. L'adiacente Sculpture Garden è chiuso dal 2023 per un progetto di riqualificazione curato da Hiroshi Sugimoto e la riapertura è prevista per il 31 ottobre 2026.
