Inauguré en 1993 à deux pas du National Mall, le United States Holocaust Memorial Museum est le mémorial officiel et le musée vivant de la nation consacrés aux six millions de Juifs et aux millions d'autres victimes des persécutions nazies. Répartie sur trois étages, la Permanent Exhibition retrace la Shoah de manière chronologique, de l'accession des nazis au pouvoir en 1933 jusqu'à la libération des camps et à l'après-guerre, à travers plus de 900 objets historiques, des documents d'archives filmés et des témoignages enregistrés de survivants. Conçu par James Ingo Freed, le bâtiment se veut délibérément troublant : ses éléments de brique, d'acier et de verre évoquent l'architecture concentrationnaire, avant de s'ouvrir sur l'espace hexagonal de la Hall of Remembrance et sa flamme éternelle. L'entrée est gratuite, et le musée propose également une exposition pour enfants, des présentations temporaires ainsi qu'un ambitieux programme de recherche et de prévention des génocides.
