Seul musée des États-Unis entièrement consacré à l'art du portrait, l'établissement a ouvert ses portes en 1968 dans l'Old Patent Office Building — un National Historic Landmark commencé en 1836, qu'il partage avec le Smithsonian American Art Museum. Au deuxième étage, la galerie « America's Presidents » réunit la seule série complète de portraits présidentiels en dehors de la Maison-Blanche, avec pour pièces maîtresses le portrait Lansdowne de George Washington par Gilbert Stuart et la toile de Barack Obama réalisée par Kehinde Wiley en 2018. Le reste de la collection s'étend des grandes figures de l'époque coloniale aux commandes contemporaines, tandis que le Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, abrité sous sa majestueuse verrière, offre un véritable salon public en libre accès entre deux expositions. À noter : certaines salles du rez-de-chaussée sont fermées pour rénovation jusqu'à nouvel ordre ; pensez à consulter le site du musée avant votre visite.
