Fondé en 1988 pour succéder au premier musée juif du monde (inauguré en 1895), le Jewish Museum Vienna est installé dans le Palais Eskeles, sur la Dorotheergasse. L'exposition permanente « Notre ville ! » y retrace l'histoire de la communauté juive viennoise, du Moyen Âge à nos jours en passant par la Shoah, complétée par des réserves visitables et des œuvres contemporaines. Un second site situé Judenplatz, à sept minutes à pied, dévoile les vestiges archéologiques de la synagogue médiévale détruite en 1421. Un billet unique donne accès aux deux lieux pendant 7 jours.
